The challenge

Hotel Edgar in Saint Brieuc, Brittany, was constructed in the 19th century as a local ship-owner’s home before being converted to the charming French boutique hotel it is today. The hotel is undergoing a renovation and extension programme which will see the construction of a new spa and well-being centre, a state-of-the-art seminar room and apartment hotels.

Following restrictions put in place to manage the Coronavirus pandemic, the management team was keen to commence the renovation programme by updating its main guest suite with practical and hygienic material so that guests could relax in confidence.

The solution

Managing Director Maxime Jullien turned to Designflooring to update the main hotel bedroom with flooring that had the authentic wood design he was looking for as well as the durability (0,55mm wear layer and 6,5mm thickness) to cope with a busy hospitality setting and a hygienic surface that is easy to clean. Choosing a rigid core herringbone design from the Van Gogh range enabled Maxime Jullien to introduce the character of a herringbone floor with the acoustic benefits of the rigid core construction.

The range also comes with the added benefit of being quick to install, reducing business downtime, ensuring the renovation was completed within strict timescales.

Results

The guest suite already boasted calming schemes with tactile materials in a gentle colour palette of grey and taupe, enlivened with quirky features such as this exotic wallpaper featuring flamingos. The contemporary style has been enhanced and updated with flooring in Golden Brushed Oak from the Van Gogh rigid core collection.

Laid in the small herringbone plank, the new floor design introduces a sense of flow and natural character to the rooms with its warm, honeyed tones and delicate grain textures. Maxime said: “We have come to realise that carpets are breeding grounds for microbes so LVT flooring offers us a far more hygienic option and is so much easier to look after. I am delighted with the results.

The room used to look dark with its brown carpet. The Golden Brushed Oak design has certainly brightened it up. “I am truly amazed by the realistic designs available and how comfortable and quiet the flooring is. All these advantages contribute to the tranquility of our hotel and the wellbeing of our guests.”
