Designing for post-Covid shopping habits

Posted on the 31/05/2022 by Designflooring

As the retail industry looks to recover from the impact of the global pandemic, it is clear that shopping habits learnt during lockdown periods have resulted in long term changes in the way we shop.

A new awareness of environmental issues means that customers are increasingly investing in products that will last and so are looking for detailed product information to enable them to make an informed and considered purchase. Visits to physical stores are often for research purposes before sales are completed online at a later date. Research shows that when consumers are purchasing in store, many are choosing to shop locally and support independent retailers.

This presents a significant challenge for retail businesses. A reinvention of physical spaces as well as a greater emphasis on customer experience rather than sales will be required to help customers feel safe again and entice them back onto the high street.

Creatively designed spaces that help customers feel comfortable and a personal approach that replicates the individual attention offered by small independent retailers will encourage shoppers to browse and ask for advice.

The aesthetics of a store will play a big role in creating a desirable inquisitive mood, emphasising experience over functionality. A welcoming and homely design will encourage customers to linger and explore while hygienic surfaces will give the reassurance of cleanliness and safety.

With social distancing measures expected to remain in place for some time, alterations to store layouts will be required, including wider circulation spaces between product displays and more spacious changing rooms.

Imaginative flooring designs are an ideal way to identify activity spaces and communicate directional wayfinding as well as add an interesting brand style. Customers can be guided effortlessly and safely around the store using a mix and match of complementary or contrasting tiles and different laying patterns. For example, a walkway in a stone design can be set alongside a product display space highlighted with a contrasting wood design. To aid one way navigation through the store, laying the walkway in a herringbone pattern will help inform customers which direction to walk or where to queue.
