Five colour trends to lift your spirits

The colours we use to decorate our homes can influence our emotions. From relaxing neutrals and pastels to energising brights, choosing the right colour scheme is the key to creating an environment that supports your wellbeing.

Today our homes are increasingly a sanctuary that nurtures and gives us space to escape the stresses of the world so it’s not surprising that the latest colour trends are calming, hopeful hues that help us bring the healing benefits of nature indoors.

Inspired by wide open skies, coastal dunes, summer flowers and autumn harvests, we look at five gentle organic colours that are hot this year and how to choose flooring that will complement and enhance each colour scheme.

Cornflower blue

Fresh as a mountain breeze, the latest shades of blue are pale and cool with just a hint of red to soften the effect. Whether you use these light blues on walls or as an accent colour in a neutral white scheme, they look great against a light and airy floor with interesting yet subtle textures such as white-washed wood or pale stone. Consider a herringbone pattern to introduce a sense of flow and help smaller rooms appear larger.

Pastel Peach

From peach melba to warm sandy tones, these warm shades of pink are neutral but never dull. Taken wall to wall in a monochrome scheme or combined with other pastel shades, peach is an optimistic colour that brings a warm energy. A floor in fresh white tones with delicate textures such as cool white marble or limed oak will add subtle character but let the colour take centre stage.

Soft sage green

Comforting grey-green is the colour of leaves under a mellow autumn sun, an earthy tone that brings peace and tranquillity. For a serene homely feel, combine this versatile colour with the grounding grey tones and textures of slate flooring or the warm browns and rustic grain details of distressed oak and add plenty of houseplants.

Nutshell brown

The colour of worn leather, walnuts and conkers, rich mid-tone browns speak eloquently of times gone by and the pleasures of slow living. Sit back and take it easy with a blend of timeless neutral colours and honest humble materials. Perhaps add an unexpected element with pops of bold orange, navy or forest green then combine with flooring in a warm mid-toned wood in either straight lay or herringbone.

Playful red

Red is an energetic colour that can be overwhelming and difficult to live with but, balanced with mid-toned neutrals such as grey and brown, can become the core of a scheme that inspires and motivates. Opt for a flooring that can hold its own against this strong colour such as the rich warm tones of reclaimed oak or walnut.
